How to set a minimum order quantity for products on Shopify
Short answer: Require a minimum quantity for selected products, so low-margin or bulk items can't be ordered in single units. In Checkpost, choose “Minimum order quantity (MOQ) per product” from Templates, adjust the values, test it, then save and enable the rule.
The problem
Low-margin consumables, samples and wholesale-style items lose money when ordered one at a time. A minimum order quantity (MOQ) keeps each order worth fulfilling.
How to set it up
- Install Checkpost from the Shopify App Store.
- Open Templates and choose Minimum order quantity (MOQ) per product.
- Pick the products and the minimum quantity.
- Use Try this rule to test a sample cart, then click Save rule.
The rule
Checkout is blocked when all of these conditions is true:
- Quantity per product across variants (products tagged moq-5) is less than 5
Shoppers see: “Some items have a minimum order quantity of 5.” at the top of checkout, in the cart and at checkout.

}Where this rule works
These are cart and checkout validations, including supported accelerated checkouts. They are current-cart policies; they do not track previous purchases of a SKU. Shopify excludes POS, recurring subscription orders and native pre-order/Try Before You Buy flows from this API. See Shopify's validation compatibility.
Tips
- Use one tag per MOQ level (moq-5, moq-10) with one rule each.
- Carts that don't contain the product are never blocked, so the rule is safe to leave on.
- Tell shoppers the minimum in the product description as well as the checkout message.
FAQ
Is the minimum per variant or per product?
Across matching variants and split lines of each Shopify product. Two colours of one product share its minimum; separate products must each meet it. Use the mix-and-match minimum for one shared minimum across the entire eligible set.
Can wholesale customers have a different MOQ?
Yes. Add a customer tag condition to each rule so retail and wholesale customers get different minimums.
