How to hide free shipping for Alaska and Hawaii on Shopify
Short answer: Hide rates named Free shipping for US addresses in Alaska or Hawaii, keeping paid rates available instead of blocking the order. In Checkpost, choose “Exclude remote states from free shipping” from Templates, adjust the values, test it, then save and enable the rule.
The problem
A remote-state surcharge can make a blanket free-shipping promise unprofitable. This preset removes the named free rate for US addresses in Alaska and Hawaii while retaining available paid services.

How to set it up
- Install Checkpost from the Shopify App Store.
- Open Templates and choose Exclude remote states from free shipping.
- Set the country, excluded state codes and exact free-rate names. This checks names, not the live price of a rate.
- Use Try this rule to test a sample cart, then click Save rule.
The rule
Hide delivery methods containing "Free shipping" when all of these conditions are true:
- Country is any of US
- State / province is any of AK, HI
Shoppers see no message: the methods are changed before checkout shows them.

Where this rule works
This changes existing delivery options; it does not create rates, change their prices or configure pickup. Address conditions are evaluated for each delivery group's own address. Product-tag conditions inspect the whole cart. Verify that an eligible delivery option remains.
Tips
- Keep a US country condition because province codes are not globally unique.
- Name the free rate clearly and match all relevant free-rate names. This preset cannot infer a zero-cost rate from its price.
- Check native shipping-zone exclusions first. A rule is useful when a shared profile or conditional policy makes separate zones cumbersome.
- Test both excluded states and an included state with a paid fallback rate present.
FAQ
Will Standard shipping with a zero price also be hidden?
No, unless Standard is among the configured method names. This rule selects titles, not rate costs.
Does the rule charge a remote-state surcharge?
No. Configure a paid rate in Shopify or your carrier app; Checkpost hides the named free option.
